Hmmm. Back in college, a French[ed] bed was one that was made with the inside sheet folded midway, so when you got in, ripppp.
But I believe this relates to the European practice of having two mattresses form what we in NAmerica would call a King or Queen bed. This way a couple can share the bed more comfortably. But the hotel has the option of splitting the beds into two, and having two singles.
At least that's my read on the term.
Alternatively, it could refer to a bed that has a full bedspread as we tend to here on this side of the Atlantic. However, in Germany and Scandinavia, most of the beds I get in hotels have just a simple down comforter across the top sheet. The comforter, unlike the one I use at home, does not flow over the bed and down the sides.
