Yep agreed. And I think it is important to be reasonable too. Some things you can have replacements for use at home, but sometimes,you don't have a necessary replacement. Eg. say you are going to a wedding and you dress shoes are in your luggage because you had/needed them on your trip. You have no choice but to get other dress shoes...it isn't reasonable to expect you should wear sneakers or sandals to a wedding. The point is that not being responsible for reasonable expenses at your home airport is a smoke and mirrors argument by the airlines. It is not in the regs...and it is probably bolstered by the credit card policies which are not subject to the same regs.
My main point is people don't need to wait for the immortal AC to bequeath permission to buy some toothpaste after 24 hours elapses. Just get what you truly need and submit the bills when you get home.

I didn't say in my previous post that AC would never pay for incidentals at one's home airport, but that they normally wouldn't. IMHO it is harder for someone to make a case for compensation for delayed baggage when you are at home. If all you had in your bag was clothes, surely you have other clothes you can wear for a day until your bag shows up. In special cases, such as the car seat, it is not reasonable to assume that someone will have a spare car seat kicking around that they can just install in a vehicle, thus the loaner...
If you are away from home without bags, that is a completely different situation IMHO as the things you need while you are away were likely in the bag and the airline should compensate accordingly (within reason).
