If it was a case of the OP being home for 4 days, then I believe that AC wouldn't normally consider paying compensation (AFAIK neither would any credit card insurance) as the assumption is typically that when you are at home you can typically get by with a few missing items.

If it was a case that the OP's destination was not his home city, then IMHO AC should have given some sort of monetary compensation.
As anit_ice pointed out, probably not material (AC never asked) but the 4-day stay was not a home stay. The flights were on the same ticket (and showed up on AC's website) so AC knew the duration of my stay as well that my return flight on another carrier left a hour before the arriving AC flight landed (which additionally means keeping the luggage on AC metal has a low probably of reaching the passenger before their departing flight).
