AA has no 3-class aircraft on the LAX-IAD route. UA does have some international 3-class planes on the route, and would be more comfortable in either business or first than AA's 2-class 737s (or any of the UA 2-class planes). AA is a typical domestic F service (I did the route on AA yesterday...), meals are OK, and IME the crews are usually good. If the choice is a UA A-320 or the AA 738's, I'd take the AA 738.
I'm not sure US is flying the LAX-DC route, but I'd avoid them.
AS is good out of DCA.
The best "F"-type experience on the route is Virgin America (LAX-IAD). Your AA/UA/US miles won't work on them, but if you have the money to buy a ticket, it's the best "up front" experience for the money.
