Have found that seats on Hawaiian flights often open up. By checking the website periodically I usually am able to either secure a seat (when the flight is getting full they will not allow seat selection online) or change to a better seat.

If that doesn't work, ask at the counter, and as someone already mentioned, folks living in Hawaii tend to be nice and will more than likely trade seats, if asked nicely.
