At least Boeing will deliver something unique, engineering and fabrication wise.
The delays of the 787 may end up considerably worse than those of the A380. Furthermore, the delays of the 787 are not merely as a result of a complex global supply chain; there are also significant engineering problems, and recently a fire, which the A380 never had to deal with. The FAA has publically stated Boeing has (had?) significant work to do before certification was possible, for the first time ever (as far as I know in Boeing's history) casting doubt about the airworthiness of the 787. Nobody ever questioned the ability of the A380 to fly, and fly well; the main problem was complex wiring for, among other things, entertainment systems, plus supply-chain issues. Some wonder when the 787 will be ready to actually carry passengers safely. No doubt Boeing will eventually pull through, but it is coming at an enormous cost of massive delays and worries that Boeing will barely break even on this project. And I am a "Boeing man", as my family has worked for the company for decades, I spent part of my life growing up in Seattle etc. etc., so I have no bias towards Airbus and it's ugly whale jets and copycat A350!
