Just to bring it back on topic, BA has improved mileage accrual for WT - all fares now get 100%. Also, if you're not in the premium cabins (C or F) then your upgrade chance may be higher - as a simple Silver I get operational upgrades to C (from WTP) on about 30-40% of my long haul flights.
Therein lies a key though - if you can persuade your employer to pay for World Traveller Plus (WTP) you have a slightly more comfortable flight, but more importantly you get 75 TP each way. So four return trips across the pond make you Silver. Then you get double miles, plus lounge access and business class check in.
If you buy WTP at least three weeks in advance you have reasonable fares (typically around £3-400 more than WT), and can still change flights for a £90 change fee.
The other thing to bear in mind is the ability to upgrade with miles. This is best used on upgrades to Club World from WTP, but only costs 25k miles for a return, subject to availability, and having bought the ticket directly with BA (as opposed through a (corporate) travel agent).
Happy flying, and welcome to FT!
