ba don't do automatic upgrades. The higher you go up the status, the more likely the operational upgrade. BA generally only upgrade when there is an operational reason to do so: i.e. overselling. BA does this to manage costs and to maximise income. One of the main advantages of this is that in Y (WT) there is no Buy on Board, food and drink, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic is free.

Automatic upgrades always cost somewhere, in my experience of US airlines it means that sometimes even in Domestic First you only get a buscuit on a 2hr+ flight.

I'm one of the unlucky high status people on BA. One of the highest levels within the highest Tier and no upgrades (Swanhunter however has had more luck. A lot of it is down to exactly that - luck. I aint grumbling I'm always in J or above
