Just to update people as this question recently came up about retention bonus. I opened the BA Visa Card last year under the 100K promo and have used it moderately over the past year, my guess is a total spend of between $12-14K. When I called yesterday to cancel expecting an offer of a retention bonus they offered nothing and frankly did not seem to care that I was cancelling. As an aside, I had previously called in January "threatening" to cancel and was unsuccessful then in getting a bonus, but chose to hold off at that time. Surprised that they felt a customer was not even worth trying to throw a bone to.
They 'threw you your bone' when you got the initial industry busting 100,000 sign-up bonus. That bonus was one of the largest, if not the largest, ever offered by any credit card company; merely for taking out a credit card!
Now you want even more....
They basically gave you the miles, upfront, in the hopes of having your business over the long term. Now you want even more....sheesh...some are never happy.
This reminds me of the story of a man complaining to God after receiving three (3) loaves of bread from heaven. But God, you only gave me two (2) hands....how will I carry the third loaf of bread!
