A couple associates of mine and I were debating this over drinks the other day, because all of them had left DXB late, but been on time the other way. We are not accustomed to such so it was entertaining. The stated reason for each delay (three of them altogether) was connecting flights. That seems to support ft101 reasoning. None knew what connecting flights were at issue, so it could have been almost anywhere.
