The Sydney Hilton is wonderful and if you need a place to stay in Auckland I think the Hilton there is perhaps even a bit better. It is out of the Princess Wharf I believe and you have beautiful views from your balcony overlooking the harbor.
I would not pay over $1,000 for "domestic" first on AC I would go with the US option and hope you get an upgrade on DCA to PHX.
Of course I flew from LAX-SYD-SFO in September on United in Economy just because I wanted to bank the miles
