In some instances you can self select to the WTMD lane. If your concerned about alarming the WTMD then go ahead a position yourself for the Nude-O-Scope if it is in use.
The odds of the kids getting a pat down are fairly small but not zero if they go through the WBI or the WTMD as long as they have no metal items on their persons.
I don't like what TSA is doing and avoid flying when I can. However I find myself choosing to fly when my schedule is tight or the distance is long.
I wish I had something better to offer but until TSA is brought under control all I can suggest is to manage the exposure as best you can.
Do be sure to complain to your electeds, airport management, and any other party you can think of.
I know this is a lot more complicated than it has to be. But, if you have time, and the airport from which you would be flying is reasonable close, you might pay a visit or two at about the time of day you think you would be flying out. If the security line can be seen from the "land side," you could observe how they are using the Cancer Machines. You might find that they only use certain lanes or that they are in use only certain times of the day. The easiest OPSEC thing to do is to stand out of the way at a location from which you can watch the checkpoint and pretend that you are using your cell phone or PDA. If you can take pictures or movies covertly with your phone, that would be even better. (Just make sure you turn off the flash so you don't draw attention to yourself.)
If this is logistically impossible, or, just for additional data, search this site because I can pretty much guarantee that there has been at least one of us who has figured out how to avoid the Cancer Machines at your airport one way or the other.
My mom (84) appears to be in the early stages of short-term memory loss. Fortunately, she is only an 8-hour drive away.
