I think the point might be that there are no red eyes going from east to west. I think most people think of red eyes as leaving in the evening and arriving the next morning. In this case, domestic red eyes are only west to east flights. I think of red eyes as flights where I lose a night of sleep. Going from JFK to LAX on UA still would allow me to get nearly a full night's sleep. Going the other way (UA 8, for instance, from LAX to JFK), however, means that I lose a night's sleep.
