What bothers me about this entire situation is that SPG made a mistake, which when discovered was then aggravated by Flyertalkers. SPG is guilty of an error, and some Flyertalkers are guilty of greed in my opinion.

Bora Bora is one of the premier resort destinations in the world. It is not even close to being in the same league as Luxor or even Bali.

Tourism in Luxor and Egypt has been slow to recover since the violent attacks on tourists in Cairo/Luxor. The current round of uncertainty in the Mideast continues to depress confidence for travel to Egypt. And even during the peak/peaceful times, Luxor was never a destination where you would want to spend a week at a resort anyway. The resorts on the Red Sea are much better. It was worth a couple of days to visit Karnak, Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings/Queens, and it was a place to end or begin a cruise on the Nile. As for Bali, we all sadly know why rates are low there now.

So, I have no doubt that you can find good deals in Egypt and Bali. But for someone with any prior exposure to/knowlege of Bora Bora to claim that they thought $100 was reasonable for an overwater bungalow is just BS in my book.

Flyertalkers are not some dumbasses who have never traveled. They know that some places are expensive to travel to and some places are cheaper. It is hard to believe that anyone would confuse Bora Bora with being cheap.

This is why I do not believe anyone was actually "put out" by this pricing mistake. I take a lot of leisure trips on short notice, but some trips require serious planning. Bora Bora is not one of those places where you can just show up with your backpack. You typically book your hotel and airfare months in advance, but only after lots of research.

I have no problem with debating the merits of companies honoring mistakes on the Internet and I agree that SPG has done a lousy job in communicating with the reservation holders, but what troubles me the most is abusive greed on the Internet.

How can we expect corporations and other service providers to act reasonably and fairly when there are individuals who will consciously and aggressively try to screw them whenever they make a mistake?
