Exactly. AA could theoretically sell you a UA ticket (used to happen more when AA.com didn't deliberately discriminate on fare classes) and you would get full UA benefits. In this case, the airline is simply acting as a travel agent.

Again, that is an airline to airline issue. Doesn't have to do with who sold the ticket.
