I believe JAL has fifth freedom rights in Canada as they used to fly NRT-YVR-MEX.

The question is would an AA metal flight with JL codeshare on LAX-YVR-HND be doable under the JBA under the technicality that JL has fifth freedom rights at YVR?

No, AA was only approved for JFK-HND. They did also apply for LAX-HND, but they only received the JFK one as the LAX slot went over to DL

There are only 4 slots available for US carriers to HND and the winners were:
DL: LAX and DTW
HA: HNL
AA: JFK

AA is having a tough time selling JFK-HND due to the departure time at HND being 6:40AM when there's an empty void of public transportation options to HND from 12:00 midnight to 4:30AM. Poor planning as always by AA IMO, it should've been early morning arrival/late evening departure HND, which currently NH does for it's HND-LAX flight and is doing relatively well compared to other HND flights.
