That flight is usually an international 777 (old configuration showing on unitedcargo) and there are a few international 777's that fly domestic routes (and 767's too - 747's are rarer domestically).
These flights are run between hubs to utilise the planes efficiently, but also to ensure that there are spare planes at the hubs when the international flights are departing (since they are longer, less frequent flights it is better to disrupt domestic flights than international).
One consequence is that these domestic flights with international planes are some of the most susceptible to equipment swaps.
