Each origin-destination pair has a maximum permitted mileage (MPM) for eastward and westward. For example: SYD-YYZ via the Pacific Ocean, or SYD-YYZ via the Atlantic Ocean and Europe.
That's not 100% true. Most do, but if there is no mileage based fare published, then there won't be a MPM for a given origin-destination pair.
