Since I never have anything in a checked bag I could not afford to part with, I always leave mine if I have a choice. If they lose it, I can get some new stuff for free to replace the stuff that was lost.

That said, I can't remember the last time I checked a bag when traveling by myself. When with Mrs x3skier, another story altogether.
