Why is that? I've flown back to the US from overseas (MUC and SYD) in the past few months, both of which have "secondary" screening at the US departure gates, and they didn't care a bit about liquids bought airside.
That information might be a bit dated and restrictions might be relaxed now. When flying CO HKG-EWR in September, they required that all liquids (even those bought airside) be disposed of before boarding the plane.
