Every time I have overnighted in ATL (or MIA) on my way to Central/South America they forced me to pick up my bags and re-check them. I don't know the official policy but something like 8 or 10 hours or more and you must pick up and recheck. Even if this wasn't the case I woudn't feel very comfortable letting bags sit at the airport overnight.
