It happens and unfortunately is not limited to United.

Just two days ago I ticketed something on Travelocity, my CC was charged. No ticketing for 24 hours. So I call up and after being on hold for an hour am told that there is a problem with the reservation because one flight misses the minimum connection time. Notice that Travelocity had no problem selling me a bad itinerary - they just had trouble booking it.
