The RI is on the beach and is a nice property. Keep in mind that they are notorious for not providing platinum Gold/Elite members any benefits. Reward points only cover a studio, so an upgrade is required (for big $) for a 1 BR or 2BR. They have publicly stated that they will not upgrade platinums even if rooms are available.

I stayed at Clearwater Suites last spring and enjoyed it. Although rooms are dated and bathrooms are small, they are all suites and have refrig and microwave. Parking (non-valet) is free, continental breakfast vouchers provided to platinums ($5 extra for full buffet), and location is convenient to many restaurants in the area. Service was excellent when we were there, and the bayfront views are great.

I've wanted to stay at the Vinoy, but have not yet had the opportunity. The Renaissance International Plaza at the Tampa airport is also very nice for a short stay, and has a great restaurant.
