We should all be adding: Turn on cell phone audio and/or video to document the entire process.

I've actually made a habit of doing this when renting a car. I do a video of my inspection with the car clearly show in the rental car spot, zooming in on any and all damage.

Never had to use it - but if I'm ever called on for damage that's not mine it'll be worth it in my time and money.
