Like everything else, a good hotel would send it with great dispatch, and somebody would be tracking it.

I don't know that there should be an expectation here, per se, but how the situation is handled will presumably reflect on the hotel and your returning business to them. One would therefore hope that the situation is resolved quickly and in a professional manner.
