McDonnell Douglas put the DC-10's center engine on the fin because that design would accommodate the longer GE engine. Lockheed would have been forced to give up two rows of seats in order to fit the GE engine, which they refused to do, and I believe McDonnell Douglas had the patent on the straight-through design.
