I would definitely try to renew before travel.
Anyhow, just want to report back after I called AA EXP desk for the same question. After some research, the agent told me my son will be fine. I requested had a note put into the itinery, the agent said there would be no need for Japan. Hope she was right ~ but I don't want to risk it.
