Jan '11 - The good, the bad and the ugly

Hi!
I just stayed at the Andaz WeHo. This is my first time posting in flyertalk, and since I got all the information I needed from here, I though on paying it back by registering and posting about my experience.

The good!
- I decided to stay here (as opposed to the Century Plaza, my other option), because somebody said it was a more upbeat area. Boy oh boy! It is! You can walk to all the bars and restaurants in Sunset, and the street is tremendously alive at night. The Andaz itself had movement at all hours.
- You know that $15 dollar amenity fee? It seems it works for the Valet! (Despite of what they tell you at checkin). You see, apparently is a $15 Food & Bev credit, however it goes directly to your bill. I guess they simply assume that you WILL incur in Food & Bev charges. But if you don't... it will be applied to whatever charge you have, including (but not limited to) the Valet.
- And being a diamond, the full breakfast ($29 value per person) is included. I signed vouchers totaling $70+ (they automatically add 15% service / gratuity charge), but they do remove all of that (including the gratuity) at checkout.
- Spacious rooms. I love the transformation they made to the balconies (essentially the balcony is now indoors, and they have a small TV there). I spent some time just sitting in the sofa next to the window and looking at the city. It's also mesmerizing to see all the activity on the street.
- They helped us book a Holywood tour (El dorado tours, about $70 per person) with which we were greatly satisfied.
- And the fact that non-alcoholic beverages in the minibar and snacks in the room are free, is pretty good, too.
- The Andaz style. They do make you feel like a VIP, with the restaurant being very cozy, almost like walking into your own kitchen (assuming you were rich and had a huge kitchen, your own chef, butlers, and your breakfast ready and waiting for you).
- The penthouse pool. The views from the top. The music and free beverages at the lobby.
- And, in my case, the greatest one: I paid with points. That was 30,000 points for both nights. The charge for the Valet was about $34 bucks for both nights and that's all I paid.
- An extra one: My girlfriend forgot her cellphone at the restaurant. We got a call at my cellphone from the Andaz guys almost immediately, and they kept it for us. I know this should be expected, but I thought on mentioning that they are honest guys.

The bad!
- The shower. It doesn't have a door nor curtain and is kind of weird... besides the shower itself (designed for style but not function) doesn't have a way to control the flow, and it's easy to splash water outside the shower area.
- It doesn't seem to have a business area. When we arrived, I needed to do some work and my room was not ready. The lobby and mezzanine were just too busy. I ended up working at the pool area (which was nice, except that it doesn't have power outlets). Here is a tip if you have to do the same: There is a power cord hanging from the roof in the southwest side of the pool area. I guess they use that for maintenance. I probably wasn't supposed to use it, but I anyway used it without any problem.
- Maybe this was only my personal experience, but the cleaning people seem to assume that you are not in your room (granted, we took a nap at 2pm). She just stormed in. The next day, she knocked but didn't seem to hear us.
- My girlfriend was not impressed with the service. I thought it was OK.
- The valet fee seems a little bit excessive. It didn't seem like it at the beginning (I travel all over the US and I find $25 parking fees not to be uncommon), but after I parked in other places in LA and saw that the charges were $2.00, $4.00 (and even $8.00 in the parking next to Grauman's right at the center of Hollywood), I think they are kind of elevated for the area. Then again, is worth it considering the convenience and the safety of your vehicle.

The ugly!
- They had a tribute going on to Ozzie Osborne. Is kind of weird to have breakfast with photos of him next to you. Some of them particularly nasty. Lol. But you can take it with humor. =)

Overall, I'm very happy with my stay. We will definitely book again at the Andaz when we come back to WeHo. Thanks a lot to all the people who posted their experiences and helped me make the decision to stay here.
