Assuming that it's less than 12 hours (24 hours on a fully paid ticket) between arrival in HND and departure from NRT, i think it should be OK. Might even be OK for award ticket, need an award guru to comment on that.

Call back, try to get someone not in India. Ask them to refer you to someone in the US, sometimes that works, although I think 1P's usually don't get sent to India.
