Stayed one night on a weekend night and hotel was about 50% occupied. Before Arrival I was upgraded to a junior suite with city /courtyard view. After asking for an alster view by mail, upgrade was changed to executive room.
The plat amenity was provided without us requesting it, we were offered either points, a fruit basket, a bar voucher or a bottle of wine of we took the latter, no further platinum recognition was given. This was a bit disappointing as I stayed the night before in the Sofitel (alter Wall) and was upgraded one room category (from classic to superior) as Aclub gold and was given a bottle of water, one voucher for a drink at the bar and some pralines incl. welcome letter from the general manager on my corner room on top floor.
When checking in in the evening I was told that if I want to have alster view I could only get a deluxe room. I then took the junior suite to the courtyard as it was very fogging outside any way. The Duplex junior suites on top floor facing the alster are no standard suites and thus not available for upgrades. They offered me to pay 90€ in addition for it what I reclined.
After entering my “junior” suite I was happily surprised as it is really big, located on 8th floor on the corner (quiet) with windows to two sides. On left side a walk-in wardrobe, afterwards the bathroom with bigggg shower and separated bathtub. Downside is that one floods the bathroom while showering and they installed a temporary to keep the water in the shower. But it works not so well.
Going into the room there is a desk, sitting area for 4 people, a flat TV all on wooden floor. After the room divider of glass comes the comfortable double bed, additional seating and another flat TV.
The breakfast was good for a 5 star hotel incl. several fresh juices and eggs cooked on demand. But the best is the view from top floor over the Aussenalster. Unfortunately it was foggy all morning long so not much to enjoy (luckily I chose the juniorsuite instead of deluxe room).
The location of the hotel is a bit of the spot (10mins walk to central station or 5€ by taxi, 15mins walk to town hall), especially compared to the Sofitel.
One remark I have to make about the floor design. The light blue painting of the walls in addition with lack of day light gives the hotel a very cold and clean hostel style. One could also say business hotel.
Thanks to former reports I knew that the room key is valid as ticket for the Alster round trips by ship or Punsch trips during winter saison which I was not told by the front desk. At least it saves you 11€ on the trip.
All in all it is a good hotel for a starting point to discover Hamburg, especially if you get a good rate. Best is currently the beatthetime for 104€ excluding breakfast.
