I sympathize with the OP, but only to a degree. If I am going to a city where they are having an Extraordinary Demand event of which I am unaware, and I find out a few days out that nothing is available, I kick myself a bit for not knowing, but then I rearrange plans as I do not want to be in an area when one of these events is happening if I am not part of it. There will be other problems (traffic, public transportation, full restaurants, airports crowded, etc) that will contribute to my misery and increase costs for my clients.

If I am going to an Extraordinary Demand event, then I make every effort to get all of my ducks in a row before I ever write the event in my calendar with anything other than an erasable pencil. I have confirmed flights, I have confirmed hotels, and all on the ground logistics that require or suggest pre-planning are taken care of. Two weeks out I double check all reservations. Two days out, I start checking weather. I take all due diligence that is necessary to make sure that I do not miss the event.

Expecting a hotel or other travel provider to accommodate me and my procrastination would never enter my mind, even if there was a remote possibility that it was available from some elite benefit. After all, there is someone on the other end of that "force" who made plans and did everything right and then find they have been pushed out by someone with more status. It is a wrong way to treat other people and I would not want it to happen to me.
