It seems it all just has to do with things you can not control (how long it takes your bid to "register" (provided your strategy was to wait to last 2 - 3 seconds of time clock)). Results were erratic - sometimes my bid registered immediately and to my great dismay, sometimes a time delay, which is how I lost an auction on a hotel I REALLY wanted.
There's no point in waiting until the last second to make a bid. Once you've made your bid the clock is reset anyway.
