I understand that people would pay a bit more for flying non-stop. What doesn't make sense to me then is that going via LAX in both directions should be even cheaper! I should just give up now and go with the flow, shouldn't I?

i think it's more because the cheaper fare classes on SYD-SFO are sold out and the SYD-LAX-SFO ones arnt on the selected dates.
I've done dummy booking using all the different combinations and on different dates as well. The cheapest fare could be SYD-SFO/SFO-LAX-SYD, SYD-LAX-SFO/SFO-SYD and SYD-LAX-SFO/SFO-LAX-SYD. Ultimately, I don't mind if my ticket ends up being cheaper by $1000.
