Too often, the name badge is not visible. In "real life" (not on an IBB), I'm reticent ro ask a total stranger her/his name (the last thing I'd want them to think is that I'm some kind of masher or perv)....

I normally handle this situation thusly: If I've decided I want to send a commendation by e-mail, I'll say to the F/A "I'd love to send in a compliment on your behalf, if you'd care to give me your employee info".
Every F/A I've done this with has been happy to give me their name, employee number, and the flight info, usually written down on a cocktail napkin. I've never had one act like I was coming off stalkerish.
