In the for what it's worth category with regard to getting up front on SAA I recently booked a *A award ticket for a friend JNB / FRA RT on SAA using UA miles. The Y seat cost 60K miles, but the C seat was 80K miles. That's only a 10K difference between Y and C for each 9 hour flight. Pretty cheap "upgrade"....
