As my home airport, I've tried quite a few ways to get around. The walking across the terminals is definitely a time saver, particularly in heavy traffic. I've done it in under 4 minutes with a backpack only. I've seen many times where the bus is still at the far end of TBIT as I walk up the curb into T6 or T7.

Don't walk through the parking garage, walk NEXT to the parking garage. Going through the garage will add an extra 3 minutes weaving in and out. There is a sidewalk that runs across it. You'll have to cross a total of 3 stoplights (one in the middle between the parking structures and two on each side of the terminals). With a 4 hour layover, I would say do the FT tradition of hopping on a Parking Spot Shuttle bus for a free trip to In N Out, my home town favorite burger joint. Do a search on In n Out, you'll find a thread dedicated to this.
