This not unique to AS, other airlines do it, too. Some airlines (AA comes to mind) will automatically cancel duplicate reservations like this. At least AS is giving you a warning. You're holding a duplicate reservation for a seat you have no plans to use and are preventing the airline from selling that seat to someone who will use it. The only way around this is to make your duplicate reservation on another airline.
