In most cases, the data port is just an outside line leftover from the dialup days.

Easiest way to tell is whether an ethernet cable fits in it (when NOT connected to your laptop!). If it is an RJ-45 jack, it *could* be ethernet. Best thing is to play it safe and call the front desk.
