I've scoured this forum and the web but can't seem to find a conclusive answer.

Is the "Data Port" in a hotel room, usually on the phone, an Ethernet connection or something else, e.g. can you just plug a laptop into it?

I've never used one and was thinking about giving it a shot on my next trip.

I read some threads about this but the questions were slightly different.
