I have more experience than I care to admit with both scenarios on AS, other airlines, and mixed itins. You've just got to remember when you short check your bags so you don't forget to claim them! This is part of the reason they always confirm where they are checking your bags through to prior to sending them up the conveyor.
Biggest issue I'd see here is its a contractor vs. AS employee, but prob right, especially since its an overnight. Don't forget- you have to get your bags in 20 mins or claim a BSG
