1) Since i'm overnighting in PDX can I have them check my bag to PDX so i can collect it and bring it to my hotel? I also don't want to risk it getting lost with the long connection
2) Since PDX-SEA-BOS is on two different itins, can i check the bag all the way through to BOS or do i have to collect it in SEA and re-check it to BOS?
You will have no problem short checking your bag. You can essentially always short check a bag to any city where the connection time is long enough. And you can definitely check a bag through on 2 separate reservations. Just don't forget to ask/clarify at check-in.
I have more experience than I care to admit with both scenarios on AS, other airlines, and mixed itins. You've just got to remember when you short check your bags so you don't forget to claim them! This is part of the reason they always confirm where they are checking your bags through to prior to sending them up the conveyor.
