Without knowing what fare / route you booked, it's entirely possible that they didn't undercut their sale fare - they may have simply had additional inventory added to a lower fare class. E.g. you bought S class but K class came available (due to cancellation or inventory management).
Airline inventory is very dynamic. The best approach is not to look at the price for the same itinerary after you've paid.
It was at the start of the AKL-SYD fare war with Jetstar.
It was heavily promoted on the NZ site as being AKL-SYD $99ow, then within 20minutes at the same sale at been dropped to $89ow. Same flights/dates as I had booked. Same booking class aswell I know someone else that book a L class that afternoon for much less.
