I think the reason it applies to the Sleepers is that if you end up sharing a cabin they need to know if you are male or female.

Sharing a cabin? Not on FGW you don't, unless there are two of you travelling together, and want to do so (it is slightly cheaper that way). They check your name & tickets as you board.
