Flight Canceled By Emirates - Possible Hotel ?

Flying KUL to MEL in February. Emirates canceled our flight which was booked back in October. They have bumped us to the next available flight which is 8+ hrs after our original flight.
So we now have to get a hotel room and we essentially miss a day in Australia. I e-mailed Emirates customer service asking of they would provide a room (since the flight cancellation had nothing to do w/ us) and they wrote back with a simple - "In this case, passenger will not provide hotel room at Kul" . Which I assume means they are not providing us with a hotel.
Anything else I can do? I am a Gold member so we could stay in the lounge for 8+ hrs but that seems far from ideal. The decent KUL hotel is $150 a day. Wouldn't mind covering that if we could possibly be upgraded but that seems like wishful thinking at this point. Any help is greatly appreciated.
