Yes.

If I need to put some rate code in, or Marriott or some other site puts it in for me, but I am booking on Marriott.com, do I need to do LNF?

No.

How do I know when I need to ask for LNF?

You never need to ask for LNF. If you want a cheaper rate for your already booked stay you can search for a cheaper publicly advertised rate, then email the folks at Marriott and most likely get a cheaper rate for your already booked stay.

It's Marriott's program, and they can run it any way they want, but people have said I need to do two separate reservations on the Marriott site to get credit for stays with a rate code, and that just seems pointless to me.

No. Those people are wrong. Whether you book with or without a rate code on Marriott.com you WILL receive credit for your nights stayed, providing you actually show up and stay those nights.

I appreciate the others who have tried to answer, but an official reply would go a long way to clarifying this for everyone. Thanks.

Sorry you haven't gotten an 'official' response from Marriott on this forum yet. You may never. It also may be similar to your experiences with CSO's on the phone as not every employee knows ALL of the answers. Your best bet is to take the answers you have received here and move forward knowing that the people who stay at Marriott most often probably know more collectively than any one CSR. Good Luck!
