Just out of curiosity, following this logic, shouldn't all liquids be banned from checked bags? Why single out alcohol? Or are other liquids banned as well?

This is spot on. Sure glass bottles are prone to breaking compared to plastic, but I've had more shampoo / lotion bottles leak all over in flight than any kind of alcohol.
