Definition of "Protect"?

What's the definition of "protect?" I've had agents use the term when rebooking me (not double-booked), as in delayed or cancelled original flights, saying I'd been rebooked and "protected" on a later flight. From that usage, I thought it meant some kind of no-bump status. In this thread, people are using it to mean double-booked on a just-in-case segment.
