I don't have statistics, but can assure you that I work with many amateur Elites. They reach Elite status through limited domestic Y and international J business travel and beyond that are not heavy travelers. If they end up on an M fare or during promotions they work through their SWUs on medium haul flights and then waste their SSWUs at the end of the year on a short/medium haul flight. A few may use on a transcontinental, but that's usually the most value I see.

Despite my best advice, many simply do not have the desire or energy for personal travel. I know it is hard to relate to, but try speaking to the E next to you on your next flight and you're likely to find someone similar.
