It is a dilemma. However the remote 'find phone' and 'wipe phone' options through having a mac account are pretty decent -so long as one remembers to ensure they are enabled.
I have a specific wallpaper on my iPhone that lists contact details in case of emergency. Not only could this be used to get the phone back to me, it can be used in the case where something happens to me. I seem to recall us having a conversation about this a few months back.

My iPhone is passcode protected becuase it is a business device, so even if someone else did find it they won't be able to use the phone immediately. I'm sure there are people out there that could get round the code, but to the average person the phone is, to all intents and purposes, locked.
