I agree that the E+ refund policies are rediculous, but according to the T&Cs, this is actually one case where it would be refunded:
"Economy Plus purchase is nonrefundable unless Economy Plus is not available for the flights on receipt or an upgrade to a Premium Cabin is later purchased."
